An analytical model for the power consumption of Dual‐Mode EEE

Abstract: An analytical model is developed for the recently proposed Dual-Mode Energy Efficient Ethernetan extension to EEE with two modes of low-power operation. The model can be used for predicting energy savings for different loads and other traffic parameters. The results from the analytical model closely match the results obtained by simulation for synthetic and real traffic.

“…To answer this question, a thorough study of the tradeoffs of the power reduction yielding from two low-power modes and the performance costs is needed. In a previous work [5], we developed an analytical model for the fraction of time a Dual-Mode EEE link as proposed in [4] would spend in the Active, Deep Sleep, and Fast Wake modes as well as in each transition which gives the average power consumption of the link via a linear function. Here, we develop a closed-form expression for the average packet delay caused by utilising Dual-Mode EEE with the same powering down policy considered in [4,5].…”

“…Similarly, Ref. [15], [24], [25] did not notice the feature of the dual-mode strategy, and thus cannot find the closed-form mean delay for the dual-mode strategy in the general case. This indicates that simply extending the models of the single-mode strategy for the dual-mode strategy is not feasible.…”

“…Currently, a few works [15], [24], [25] applied the analytical models developed for single-mode strategies to study the dual-mode strategy. Based on the model in [26] and [27], Ref.…”
