“…Alatise et al, reported increase in length of sigmoid colon and mesocolon with age [6]. Yamazaki et al, also found a similar positive correlation while, Sadahiro et al, showed a negative correlation with age [19,20]. However, authors like Bhatnagar et al, Atamanlp et al, found no correlation of parameters with age or its correlation with various measurements in both gender [3,7].…”

“…The degree of constipation has been reported to correlate significantly with the lengths of the transverse and sigmoid colon in Japanese patients, suggesting that right-sided diverticula may not be associated with constipation. 21 However, because most studies of colonic diverticula were performed in Western patients, in whom left-sided diverticula predominate, the pathophysiology of right-sided diverticula remains unclear. Additional detailed studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying the development and predominance of right-sided diverticula in Asian populations.…”

“…Yamazaki et al [111] report that the degree of constipation is significantly correlated with the length of transverse colon and of sigmoid colon. In Japanese the sigmoid colon is long and usually "O" shaped; indeed, if the anatomical names of the large intestine had originated in Japan, the "sigmoid colon" might now be known as the "omicroid colon."…”

“…The length of the large intestine has been measured by several researchers [110,111,112,113,114,115,116,117,118,119], but it is difficult to compare these data because of differences in the methods of measurement employed. Western reports generally use two methods, i.e., measuring the distance of string from mouth to anus, and by postmortem survey [112,113,114,115,116,117,118,119]; in contrast, Japanese reports determine the length of the large intestine by radiographs with barium enema [110,111]. As mentioned above, Sugihara et al [105] and Sasaki et al [107] have suggested that intraluminal pressure causes the development of right-sided diverticula in Japan.…”
