For application of observed anomalies of the total electron content (TEC) in the ionosphere for short-term earthquake prediction, it is necessary to understand the physical nature of such anomalies during the preparation of a strong seismic event. The physical mechanism of occurrence of such anomalies is considered in order to distinguish the TEC disturbance of a seismic origin and to clear the processes in the lithosphere resulted in an appearance of the TEC anomaly in the ionosphere. It is supposed that the observed TEC anomalies arise as a result of occurrence of additional electric field in the ionosphere demonstrated by numerous satellite data before the impending earthquakes. At the same time, an injection of charged aerosols into the atmosphere in the epicentral earthquake area was detected. As a result, an electromotive force arises in the surface layer of the atmosphere, which initiates a perturbation of the electric current in the global circuit and the electric field appearance in the ionosphere. We have shown that the TEC disturbance arises as a result of the heating of the ionosphere by electric current and the plasma drift in the electric field of this current. The spatial distribution of TEC arises as a result of the combined action of these two factors, and its nature depends on the relationship between them. Based on the developed model the numerical study of the spatial distribution of TEC in the ionosphere is possible for a given horizontal distribution of the concentration of charged aerosols in the atmosphere near the Earth’s surface.

Abstract. The paper presents the statistics of occurrence of anomalous disturbances in high-frequency geoacoustic emission of near surface sedimentary rocks and in atmosphric electric field by the ground surface before earthquakes. Long-term continuous series of geoacoustic emission measurements in 2003-2012 at "Mikizha" observation site and atmospheric electric field data obtained within summer-autumn period in 2006-2008 at "Mikizha" site and in 2009-2012 at "Karymshina" observation site were used for the analysis. Anomalous disturbances of the emission and of the field were compared with the earthquake catalogue of Kamchatka Branch of Geophysical Service RAS.

We studied, by the mono-and multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), time fluctuations in the dynamics of seismoacoustic data, recorded in Karymshina site, which is located in a seismic area of Kamchatka. We took a series of seismoacoustic responses to the regional seismic events with the magnitudes M > 4 for the period 2017-2018. The series was divided into three groups (high, medium and low) based on the amplitude of recorded seismoacoustic response. Background noise segments of the signals demonstrated monofractal behavior similar to white noise by almost constant values of generalized Hurst exponent H q ≈0.5 and very small width of the multifractal spectrum Δa ≈ 0.1. Analysis of the high amplitude seismoacoustic signals with clear P-, S-and coda waves showed that P-and S-waves demonstrate wider multifractal spectrum (Δa P = 0.37, Δa S = 0.35) and range of generalized Hurst exponents H q in comparison with coda wave, characterized by almost constant H q and minimal width of multifractal spectrum (Δa CODA = 0.13). We showed that the properties of the multifractal spectrum could be used in detection of seismic wave arrival, estimation its duration and separation of P-, S-and coda waves. Application of the monofractal DFA in a sliding window showed that the acoustic signal transits from monofractal and uncorrelated background noise (Hurst exponent equals to 0.5) into the long-range dependent state during seismic waves arrival, that is helpful in analysis of the signals, particularly in case of low amplitude acoustic responses, usually demonstrating an unclear waveform. Difference in multifractal spectrum width between the original low amplitude signal and its surrogates, obtained by random shuffling showed that the multifractality in the signal is dominantly due to long-range correlations.
