“…Ontogenetic change in diet from carnivory or omnivory to herbivory is common in fishes (Mitchell 1953, Ciardelli 1967, Christensen 1978 and is a widespread pattern among other animals with herbivorous adults (Clark & Gibbons 1969, Pough 1973 . Previous studies of the relation between diet and gut morphology in fishes have dealt primarily with comparisons of the adults of various carnivorous, omnivorous, and herbivorous species .…”

“…Contrary to Wells (1980), however, C. lirnatula that were continuously submerged in tidepools actively foraged during daylight hours; in contrast, the small number of C. digitalis found in the pools appeared inactive. Several southern California tidepool fishes are known to feed on acmaeiid limpets (Mitchell 1953, Johnston 1954, Stephens et al 1970. In particular, the kelpfish Gibbonsia elegans was found to be the most abundant of 22 species of tidepool fishes in a survey by Mitchell (1953).…”

“…Kyphosids are omnivorous, with varying degrees of herbivory (Quast 1968, Feder et al 1974, Bray & Ebeling 1975, Hobson & Chess 1976, Laur & Ebeling 1983. However, even though algae were the dominant component of some species' diets, Quast (1968) and others (Mitchell 1953, Burge & Schultz 1973, Wheeler 1980 assumed that algae were consumed incidentally and were unimportant, relative to animal prey due to the apparent lack of cellulolytic enzymes or gut symbionts for cellulose digestion (Stickney & Shumway 1974). More recent studies have shown that two members of the Kyphosidae in the southern hemisphere (Kyphosus cornelii and K. sydneyunus) are capable of fermentive digestion of marine algae (Rimmer & Wiebe 1987).…”
