An analysis of river fragmentation by dams and river dewatering in Costa Rica

Abstract: Hydropower development is accelerating in the tropics, especially construction of small dams. Small dams are often classified as those lower than 15 m in height or with reservoir capacity less than 3 × 10 6 m 3. Small dams frequently operate with water diversions from the main river channel, thereby affecting river connectivity through the creation of a dewatered reach. However, the extent and impact of dewatered reaches have been overlooked in most analyses of river fragmentation and dams to date. In Costa Ri… Show more

“… Jones et al, 2008 ; Kronfeld-Schor et al, 2021 ). They also include effects on geography, such as river fragmentations and dewatering ( Farah-Pérez, Umaña-Villalobos, Picado-Barboza, & Anderson, 2020 ). All these effects can be seen as dependency relationships that change behaviour at the level of the organism and in doing so can impact epidemic cycles.…”

“…Modelling Impacts included methods that used spatial data to assess environmental changes due to the operation of a ROR HP. These types of methodologies focused on assessing the connectivity of rivers at the basin scale [25,26,27,28,29,30,31]. All the methods that were found during the literature review for this paper have been included in Table 2.…”

“…In areas where irrigation gives year-round access to open water, Japanese encephalitis is markedly increased ( Mackenzie et al, 2004 ), and water containers have been shown to serve as dry-season refugia for Dengue vectors ( Govoetchan et al, 2014 ). On the contrary, more than 50% of global wetlands have been lost in the past century (e.g., Davidson, 2014 ), groundwater overexploitation causes the disappearance of freshwater springs (e.g., Rödiger et al, 2020 ), and dams cause river fragmentation and dewatering (e.g., Farah-Pérez et al, 2020 ); these, in turn, may affect species patterns of distribution, abundance, and seasonality.…”
