“…Damodar et al 15 suggested that this may be influenced by younger surgeons encouraging more patients to utilize online reviews, indicating that it may serve surgeons well to cultivate a social media presence 5 , 16 and/or focus on improving factors discussed later in this study. Regarding the impact of surgeon sex on reviews, the literature is less clear as some studies found no difference in online ratings between sexes 17 19 while others found female surgeons to be rated more highly. 14 , 20 However, male surgeons in this study were found to have significantly higher star ratings with no difference in sentiment score.…”

“…Our research demonstrated similar findings, noting that only 18.2% of reviews written about pediatric orthopaedic surgeons on PRWs were rated as one-star. While the impact of negative reviews may contribute to increased job-related stress, research has shown that an emphasis on nonclinical aspects of care, including bedside manner, improved wait times, and increased time spent with the patient, can help increase a physician’s rating on PRWs 1,4,12,16–18 . Therefore, possible administrative goals to decrease the number of negative one-star reviews may be to decrease total patient involvement while increasing the ratio of surgical to nonsurgical patients seen by the surgeon.…”

“…Research has shown that 68% of patients will utilize PRWs when searching for a new physician 3 . Previous literature has shown that 98.5% of pediatric orthopaedic surgeons have been rated at least one time on PRWs, with an average rating of 4.14 out of 5.0 stars 4 . A recent study investigating 26 various medical specialties demonstrated that 37% of patients will avoid a provider with an overall rating of <2 out of 5 on PRWs 5 .…”
