The objective of this article is to contribute to an understanding of the evolution of a population of social economy enterprises faced with the economic crisis, namely by referring to the case of Montreal. We apply a two-step approach. For one, we use an innovative discrete-time survival model that takes spatial heterogeneity into account. In a second step, this model is used to predict the survival of different forms of the social economy, according to various proposed typologies for identifying hybrid organizational forms. It is understood that certain organizational forms (professional social economy) have fared better than others (emerging social economy). Organizations combining several sources of financing and several forms of paid or volunteer work likewise have greater chances of survival.

L’objectif de cet article est de contribuer à une compréhension de l’évolution d’une population d’entreprises d’économie sociale confrontée à la crise économique, en nous appuyant sur l’exemple de Montréal. Nous mobilisons une approche en deux étapes. Nous utilisons un modèle novateur de survie en temps discret tenant compte de l’hétérogénéité spatiale. Ce modèle est ensuite utilisé pour prédire la survie de différentes formes d’économie sociale, suivant différentes typologies proposées identifiant des formes organisationnelles hybrides. On constate que certaines formes organisationnelles (économie sociale professionnelle) ont mieux survécu que d’autres (économie sociale émergente). De même, les organisations combinant plusieurs sources de financement et plusieurs formes de travail salarié ou bénévole ont eu plus de chances de survivre.

Abstract. Discrete variables that have an inherent sense of ordering across outcomes are commonly found in large data sets available to many economists, and are often the focus of research. However, assumptions underlying the standard ordered probit (which is usually used to analyse such variables) are not always justified by the data. This study provides a review of the ways in which the ordered probit might be extended to account for additional heterogeneity. Differing from other reviews in scope, application and relevance in economic settings, a series of issues pertaining to choices of variables, and the economic assumptions underlying each model are discussed in the context of measuring the underlying health of respondents. The models are applied to a wave of the household, income and labour dynamics in Australia survey, in order to check the appropriateness of such assumptions in an applied context.

Comparison Between Applicability of the Logit and Probit Models to Diagnose Influencing Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Disease in Mashhad

Background: Cardiovascular disease is considered as one of the most common diseases, causing many deaths worldwide annually. Objectives: The current study was aimed at diagnosing influencing factors of cardiovascular disease by comparison between implicational Logit and Probit models. Patients and Methods:This work is based on a study group approved by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences with the code of 85134 (Mashhad Study). Information was collected by the stratified-cluster sampling method and registering more than 7603 people randomly from Mashhad city. From them 682 were patients with cardiovascular disease. Data was analyzed using statistical Logit and Probit models. Results: After analyzing linearity and interactional effects between variables, by considering the other variables unchanged, the Odd Ratio of sex, age, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (hdl-c), systolic blood pressure (sys-bp), body mass index (BMI), smoking, total cholesterol, High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP) and history on cardiovascular disease were 4.231, 2.70, 0.98, 3.8, 3.421, 2.014, 1.5, 1.7 and 7.215 respectively. Conclusions: Independent variables such as sex, age, hdl-c, sys-bp, BMI, smoking, cholesterol and hs-CRP were considered as influencing variables, and education, marital status, disease history, height, waist circumference, diastolic blood pressure and low density lipoprotein were removed from the models.
