An Analysis of Frequency, Morphology, and Locations of Maxillary Sinus Septa Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography

Abstract: Septa are common anatomical structures and are most often found in the first or second molar region on the floor of the maxillary sinus. To prevent possible complications during sinus floor elevation procedures, a thorough three-dimensional radiographic examination of the sinus prior to surgery is recommended.

“…However, like any surgical intervention, this procedure is also associated with several complications, which may compromise the outcome of the surgery and the success of the implant treatment . A thorough knowledge of the anatomy and possible variations of the maxillary sinus is therefore essential in order to minimize the risk of potential complications related to the procedure . Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) may be a useful diagnostic tool for providing a comprehensive radiographic assessment before SFE surgery…”

“…In a study by Kim et al, 20 septa were found in 50.8 and 23.7% of the sinuses in the middle and posterior segments respectively. In studies by Pommer et al 27 and Bornstein et al, 28 the most frequent positions of the septa were above the 1st and 2nd maxillary molars. In a study by Shahidi et al, 29 septa were present in the anterior, middle, and posterior segments of the sinuses in 58.9, 21.1, and 20% of the cases respectively.…”
