Long‐term analysis of occurrence of fog events at 14 stations across part of fairly flat terrain of Serbia, which includes the area of the Pannonian Plain, is conducted. For the majority of stations (Palić, Novi Sad, Kikinda, Vršac, Belgrade‐Surčin, Smederevska Palanka, Valjevo, Loznica, Negotin) data were available for the 33‐year period, 1973–2005. For the rest of stations, data were available for shorter periods: for Sombor and Veliko Gradište 1982–2005, for Sremska Mitrovica and Belgrade‐Vračar 1983–2005, and for Zrenjanin 1989–2005. Fog event is defined only based on visibility observations. Almost 75% of analysed data sets showed a negative annual trend of low‐visibility events throughout the analysed time periods. This negative trend is increasing as it goes towards the north of Serbia and most of the stations with decreasing trend are rural. Fog is most frequent in the period between October and February and it is likely mostly due to radiative cooling and especially in October when an anticyclonic synoptic situation is prevailing. Stations with higher elevations have more lasting fog events and fog events with more variable mean relative humidity compared to their counterparts, which ranges from 92.1–97.4%. For most of stations December is the month with the highest frequency of occurrence of fog in the presence of a low cloud. Frequency of fog onset during low wind speed (below 2 m/s) is analysed along with its correlation with a frequency of fog onset when the cloud base height is equal to or above 2,000 m. In ~71% of the stations correlations are higher than 0.6, and stations with a lower elevations show a generally better correlation than those with higher elevations.

Forecasting air pollution in big cities is of great importance, and there are various types of air pollution indices (APIs). In the present study, the level of air pollution in winter 2011 at four point-locations in Belgrade, Serbia, was measured using wind speed data and non-standard and standard air temperature data, measured at 10 and 2 m, respectively. Using multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis, equations to forecast the API were obtained. This forecast was verified using data from the winter of 2012/2013. The results obtained are well aligned with the monitored API and verified by the root mean square error (RMSE). It is shown that standard meteorological measurements representative of the city can accurately predict the API at individual point-locations as well as using temperature and wind speed measured at each respective location. Three locations, which measured SO 2 , NO 2 , PM 10 , O 3 and CO, showed poor air quality for > 78% of days observed. For the fourth location, the final estimate of prevailing air quality could not be calculated due to the absence of PM 10 measurements. Forecasting the API on a short-term scale can be of great help for long-term air-quality improvements.

Abstract. Radiation fog occurs over many locations around the world in stable atmospheric conditions. Air traffic at busy airports can be significantly disrupted because low visibility at the ground makes it unsafe to take off, land and taxi on the ground. Current numerical weather prediction forecasts are able to predict general conditions favorable for fog formation, but not the exact time or location of fog occurrence. A selected set of observations available in near realtime at strategic locations could also be useful to track the evolution of key processes and key parameters that drive fog formation. Such observations could complement the information predicted by NWP models that is made available to airport forecasters in support of their fog forecast. This paper presents an experimental setup based on collocated automatic lidar and ceilometer measurements, relative humidity measurements and horizontal visibility measurements to study hygroscopic growth of fog condensation nuclei. This process can take several minutes to hours and can be tracked using lidar or ceilometer attenuated backscatter profiles. Based on hygroscopic growth laws we derive a set of parameters that can be used to provide alerts minutes to hours prior to formation of radiation fog. We present an algorithm that uses the temporal evolution of attenuated backscatter measurements to derive pre-fog formation alerts. The performance of the algorithm is tested on 45 independent pre-fog situations at two locations (near Paris, France and Brussels, Belgium). We find that pre-fog alerts occur predominantly 10–50 min prior to fog formation at an altitude ranging 0 to 100 m above ground. In a few cases, alerts can occur up to 100 min prior to fog formation. Alert durations are found to be sensitive to relative humidity conditions found a few hours prior to the fog.
