Purpose This study aimed to explore factors affecting behavioral intention of receiving periodic health examinations (hereafter, BIE) among people aged 60 and over in rural China, namely, Shandong Province, using the extended health belief model (EHBM). Patients and Methods Participants were selected using stratified multi-stage random sampling. Three cities were selected based on economic level. Subsequently, three counties and three villages were selected from each sample city and county. Finally, 30 respondents were selected from each sample village. Face-to-face surveys were conducted using a structured questionnaire between March and September 2017. Multiple linear regression was conducted to investigate the association between BIE and eight dimensions of EHBM: perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, perceived self-efficacy, cues to action, health knowledge, and social support. Results Of the 509 rural respondents aged 60 years and older, the average score of behavioral intention was 4.43±0.80. Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated poor BIE among participants who were men, were current smoker, were current drinker, were aged 70 years or over, had lower social support, and perceived lower self-efficacy, less benefits, and more barriers. Among them, barriers were found to have the strongest association with BIE (B’=−0.556; p<0.001). Qualitative interviews revealed that reasons for not receiving periodic health examinations (PHE) included pain, cost, difficulty in finding a health care provider, time and scheduling, potential lack of trust in the physician, and value of the PHE. Conclusion This study highlighted the importance of psychological variables in the acceptance of PHE among the elderly in rural China and provided insights for further intervention designs targeting identified groups and performed by general practitioners. Addressing medical mistrust, strengthening, and enhancing one’s social support network and health communication channels, such as bulletin boards, may serve to facilitate BIE.

The substitution of chemical pesticides by biopesticides is crucial to ensure the quality of agricultural products and to foster environmental sustainability. This study takes the willingness and the behaviors of rice farmers on the application of biopesticides as the research object. The survey questionnaire was designed based on the theory of rational small-scale farmers from three aspects: “individual and family characteristics of farmers”, “cognition of farmers” and “external factors”. The survey was then conducted on 163 rice farmers in seven prefecture-level cities in Jilin Province of China. The logistic model was used to analyze the influencing factors resulting in the deviation of the behaviors of the rice farmers from their initial willingness on the application of biopesticides. The explanatory structure model (ISM) was used to analyze the logical hierarchical relationship among various influencing factors. The results show that: (1) For 45% of the farmers surveyed, there’s a deviation between their willingness and behaviors regarding the application of biopesticides; (2) Among the significant factors leading to the deviation between farmers’ willingness and behaviors concerning the application of biopesticides, the surface-level direct factor is biopesticide awareness. The mid-level indirect factors are agricultural product quality and safety awareness and the deep-level root cause is farmers’ education level. (3) The primary reason for the deviation of the farmers’ behaviors from their willingness is their lack of knowledge about biopesticides and the biopesticides’ incomplete market structure. Based on the comprehensive analysis, it is recommended to improve the professionalization of the farmers, to strengthen the publicity of green production and to accelerate the formulation of the biopesticides market to further promote the usage of biopesticides.

The aim of the present research was to analyze the farmers’ intention towards participation in the management and conservation of wetlands through the lens of the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB). To do this, a cross-sectional survey of Iranian farmers was carried out. To select the samples, a multi-stage random sampling process with a proportional assignment was employed. The research instrument was a researcher-made questionnaire whose validity and reliability were verified using various quantitative and qualitative indicators. The results of the extended TPB using structural equation modeling showed that four variables, namely moral norms of participation in management and conservation (MNPMC), attitude towards participation in management and conservation (APMC), subjective norms towards participation in management and conservation (SNPMC), and self-concept about participation in management and conservation (SCPMC) had positive and significant impacts on intention towards participation in management and conservation (IPMC). The results also revealed that that entering MNPMC and SCPMC into TPB could increase its explanatory power. Also, the fit indicators supported the extended TPB. From a practical point of view, the present study provides justifications and insights for the use of MNPMC, APMC, SNPMC, and SCPMC in policies and programs intended to encourage farmers and local communities to participate in wetlands management and conservation.
