“…Exposure to and knowledge about people with disabilities can positively influence attitudes of teachers. That result is consistent with the results of past research (Alberto et al, 1978;Efron & Efron, 1967;Glass & Meckler, 1972;Harasymiw & ~lorne, 1976;Larrivee, 1981;Mandell & Strain, 1978). “…Almost without exception having attended a course on special education has been found to be associated with positive attitudes towards mainstreaming (Harvey & Green, 1984, Mandell & Strain 1978, Stephens & Braun 1980. French and Henderson (1984) showed that attitudes can be modified through training and Leyser and Abrams (1983) reported significant attitude change in 19 regular class teachers following an introductory special education course and practicum.…”

“…Yuker (1988) noted that previous research in this area has produced inconsistent results. While some studies have indicated a negative relationship between attitude and years of experience (Harasymiw & Home, 1975;Mandell & Strain, 1978), Benham (1988) reported that occupational therapy personnel with up to 5 and more than 11 years of practice had the most favorable attitudes. Benham questioned whether the decline in attitude shown in subjects with 6 to 10 years of experience could have been related to feelings of disillusionment or decreased optimism about their clients.…”
