An analysis of air pollution at some industrial areas of Kano using the AERMOD Model

Abstract: The effect of pollution on air quality has been a concern for mankind for a long time. In some cases the problem is essentially one of local emissions in a given urban area leading to an adverse effect on air quality in that same area. However, in the general case, the problem is more diverse in that the problem of air pollution has multiplicity effects beyond the point source and these effects are dynamic in nature. Such effects are usually evaluated using dynamical equations. In this study, a compreh… Show more

“…AERMOD is utilized for modelling atmospheric dispersion using Gaussian plume distribution (Idris et al, 2019). It was developed in the 1990s by United States Environment Protection Agency (US EPA) Regulatory Model Improvement Committee to generate a model that is similar to ISC3 (Industrial Source Complex Model) with additional concept of planetary boundary layer (PLC) in order to implement atmospheric stability characterization to the model.…”

“…Figure above shows elements that are needed in performing modelling by using AERMOD. According to Idris et al (2019), there are two preprocessors involved namely AERMET and AERMAP. AERMET is used to calculate parameter of boundary layer (important in estimating profiles of wind, turbulence and temperature) with the help of acquired meteorological data.…”

“…It was noted that, with the introduction of available technologies, effective waste-gas treatment plants and strict control over harmful substances (particularly NO 2 ) significantly decreased the concentrations of pollutants [2]. The analysis of air pollution in some industrial areas that was calculated using AERMOD allowed us to obtain a high-precision result of both daily and hourly NO 2 concentrations [3]. Researchers have developed a system of monitoring industrial air pollution to increase safety and health as well as stable working environments using the QFD approach for improving it [4].…”
