An alternative technique for hollowing maxillary complete denture

Abstract: Extreme resorption of edentulous maxilla may cause difficulty during fabrication of a maxillary complete denture. Increased inter-ridge distance often creates a clinical problem due to heavy-weighted maxillary prosthesis. This article elaborates an alternative approach for hollowing a maxillary complete denture. It utilizes a clear template of the trial denture facilitating the creation of a gelatin cavity form. This hollowing ensures the even thickness of both denture base resins for structural integrity and … Show more

“…Hollowing of obturator or complete denture prosthesis using various materials and techniques has been abundantly described in literature. Some of the commonly used materials include sugar 17 , salt, gelatin 18 , thermocol, polyurethane foam 19 , wax or acrylic shim, silicone 20,21 etc. A hollowing technique using gelatin soap has been adapted here considering its ease of retrievability and ability to withstand the curing temperature of acrylic resin 22 .…”

“…Various methods of hollowing maxillary/mandibular dentures were proposed in the past by several authors by using gelatin mix, polystyrene (thermocol pieces) and silicone putty [7][8][9][10] . Every technique has its pros and cons.…”

“…Orthodontic wire enables the easy retrieval of the catheter after the processing of the denture. Gelatin was used as a spacer for maxillary hollow denture by Deogade et al [22] as it was very easily available, was easy to recontour and easy to retrieve by using hot water to flush it through the small opening with help of a syringe. The approach uses a clear thermoplastic template of a trial to facilitate insertion of gelatin that acts as a spacer and to maintain the thickness of the resin over the hollow cavity.…”
