An All-Optical Modulation Format Conversion for 8QAM Based on FWM in HNLF

Abstract: In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical modulation format conversion scheme from amplitude shift keying (ASK) and quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) to 8-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (8QAM), using four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in highly nonlinear fiber. In the FWM process, a 20-Gbits/s return-to-zero QPSK (RZ-QPSK) signal and a 10-Gbit/s ASK signal are utilized as probe light and pump light, respectively. A 30-Gbits/s RZ-8QAM signal, which is the idler light, is succes… Show more

“…To overcome the issue, various all-optical methods are proposed based on fiber nonlinear effects. For example, some optical aggregations have been demonstrated such as multiple on-off keying (OOK) signals to a MPSK signal [3], two quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals to a 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal [4], a QPSK and amplitude and phase shift keying (APSK) to an 8QAM signal [5], and four OOK signals to a polarization division multiplexing (PDM) QPSK signal [6]. Meanwhile, optical de-aggregation has also been studied.…”

“…Direct modulation format and wavelength conversion in the optical-domain converting from a PAM to PSK signal to an IQ modulated signal using nonlinear optical effects such as cross-phase modulation (XPM) and four-wave mixing (FWM) has been demonstrated to construct a future optical-based HNGN [5][6][7][8][9]. Research on PSK to PAM signal conversion [10][11] and PSK to quadrature amplitude modulation conversion [12][13][14][15] using similar nonlinear optical effects has been demonstrated for a long period. When generating nonlinear optical effects, semiconductor optical amplifier such as active device is superior in miniaturization.…”
