An Algorithm Allowing Preservation of the On-Call Working Pattern for Post-EWTR Specialist Trainees

Abstract

The European WorkingTime Regulations (EWTR) came in to full effect for medical trainees in 2009 as a response to health and safety concerns regarding the long hours of work among the trainees and its implications for patient safety. This came as a more restrictive superimposition on a previous regulation of working patterns, the 'New Deal' that was implemented by 2003. The reduction of working hours imposed was met with concern throughout the NHS, especially among surgical specialties with regards to the impact on training and patient safety. Neurosurgery was no exception.
