An advanced evaluation of spouted beds scale-up for coating TRISO nuclear fuel particles using Radioactive Particle Tracking (RPT)

Abstract: A set of dimensionless groups has been proposed in the literature by He et al. [He Y. L., Lim C. J., Grace J. R., Scale-up studies of spouted beds, Chemical Engineering Science, 52 (2), 329-339, 1997] to scale-up gas-solid spouted beds while maintaining their hydrodynamics similarity. The literature reported studies do not provide conclusive assessments about this methodology. Therefore, in this work, we have applied an advanced non-invasive radioactive particle tracking (RPT) technique for the first time to e… Show more

“…In our laboratory, the mentioned assessment has been achieved using advanced non-invasive techniques: Gamma ray computed tomography (CT) and Radioactive particles tracking (RPT) techniques. With these techniques, we were able to address important issues related to the scale up of spouted beds [40,41]. It has been proven through practical experimentation and research studies, that CT and RPT are the most promising technologies for visualizing multi-phase flow systems (i.e.…”

“…As an evaluation of this approach, the scale-up methodology was carried out using sophisticated optical fibre probes that measured simultaneously the local velocity of solids, normal and shear stresses and turbulent kinetic energy [200]. The study evidenced the need of local measurements of hydrodynamic parameters for the correct scale up procedures.…”

“…Reduced-scale tests are often based on a dynamic similarity criterion, and to define the experiemnts, dimensionless groups can be used [23] [24]. Dynamic similarity is achieved when the dimensionless groups provide the same numerical results for the different scales.…”
