An adult ureterocele complicated by a large stone: A case report

Abstract: HighlightsUreterocele is a rare condition. One of its presentation is the presence of a stone, usually a solitary stone, inside the ureterocele.Ureteroceles represent a clinical challenge in term of diagnosis and management due to their variable presentations and types. Our patient ureterocele was complicated by a large calculus so we decided to proceed with endoscopic resection of the ureterocele along with stone removal.

“…3 No any co-existing conditions in present case such as ureteral calculus, as seen in other studies. 2,7 Modern treatment of ureteroceles, particularly ureteroceles in adults like present index case include minimally invasive endoscopic unroofing using resectoscopes or even endoscopic technique of multiple punctures at the base of ureterocele using Holmium laser. 2,8,9 Our centre is yet to have facilities for endoscopic intervention of ureterocele, hence we managed our case by open surgical repair.…”

“…The aetiopathogenesis of ureteroceles is not well understood, however many proposed mechanisms exist with the incomplete dissolution of the chwalla membrane occurring during embryonic development the most accepted cause. 2 Tanagho hypothesized that the distal ureteral segment, which is incorporated later into the developing urogenital sinus, may be acted on by the same factors that cause the expansion of the urogenital sinus to form the bladder together with a delay in establishing the lumen of the ureteral bud. 4 Clinical presentation of ureteroceles are variable.…”

“…The clinical presentation of ureteoceles varies widely depending on the age group with children having more acute and life threatening presentations than adults. These presentations have been attributed to the different types of ureteroceles with the ectopic variants and those arising from duplex systems presenting with more severe symptoms while the single unit orthotopic variants present in an unremarkable manner and may be detected incidentally at ultrasonography [17][18][19][20].…”

“…Ureteroceles have diverse presentations ranging from sepsis, recurrent UTIs, renal failure, to no symptoms at all being detected incidentally or by antenatal ultrasonography. 5 Currently, most of the ureteroceles are diagnosed in the screening for congenital malformations. 6 The most common postnatal presentation is during an evaluation for UTI in early infancy.…”
