An adaptive joining mechanism for improving the connection ratio of ZigBee wireless sensor networks

Abstract: SUMMARYWireless sensor networks (WSNs) are well suited to many applications, including environment surveillance and target tracking. ZigBee is an IEEE 802.15.4-based standard that is considered suitable for WSNs. The functional operations of a ZigBee network rely on self-organized network connections and the proper deployment of sensor devices. However, the devices comprising a ZigBee network may become isolated from the network after the joining phase due to the configuration constraints of the ZigBee standar… Show more

“…Management of these applications running on various types of consumer devices in one network is a challenging problem. Therefore, a heterogeneous architecture consolidating different operating systems and communication protocols such as Bluetooth, ZigBee, and the traditional IP networks seems to be emergent [1][2][3]. Normally, in IP networks, each electronic device behind a network address translation (NAT) is assigned a private IP address by the corresponding service provider [4].…”

“…Successful operation of a multihop protocol requires self organizing cluster formation, autonomous CH selection, and an energy-efficient MAC. Multihop synchronization, cluster formation, and CH election techniques have been addressed in many research works [10,3,[12][13][14][15][16][17]. In [10], the authors have presented the RT-Link protocol, which provides a multihop synchronization scheme.…”

“…In [14], the authors introduced a technique of application-aware radio duty cycling called on-demand spatial TDMA for a moderate-scale network. In [15], an ultra-low duty cycle SCP-MAC was proposed. The SCP-MAC has shown better performance in energy saving than the existing MAC protocols such as S-MAC, T-MAC, B-MAC, and WiseMAC.…”

“…The Wireless Sensor Network [1,2,3] is of this type of network. In the wireless sensor network, besides two important issues, the sensor coverage [4,5] and the network connectivity [6,7] are closely related to the sensing range and the effect of data delivery, the efficiency and reliability of data broadcast transmission are also important research subjects. As the wireless network has lower data rate and higher bit error ratio, as compared with the wired network, and the wireless devices in the wireless sensor network have the task of packet forwarding and must execute routing protocol related operation, if a favorable algorithm is not used in data broadcast, the network overhead will be increased, and the efficiency and reliability of the network will be decreased.…”
