An adaptable XML based approach for scientific data management and integration

Abstract: Increased complexity of scientific research poses new challenges to scientific data management. Meanwhile, scientific collaboration is becoming increasing important, which relies on integrating and sharing data from distributed institutions. We develop SciPort, a Web-based platform on supporting scientific data management and integration based on a central server based distributed architecture, where researchers can easily collect, publish, and share their complex scientific data across multi-institutions. Sci… Show more

“…The representation of AIM data is an XML based format. AIM data management and sharing for NCI TCGA Enterprise Use Case [42] is through xService (AIME [43]), which supports semantically enabled XML data services for sharing the data via caGrid. Figure 8 shows an example screenshot of making semantic annotations for the UML model generated from XML Schema.…”

“…SciPort takes an XML based approach for data modeling, schema representation, and storage and queries, 1, 2, 3 and is supported by a backend native XML database. In SciPort, scientific data are represented as XML modeled documents, and documents are also organized into a hierarchy way for convenient browsing.…”

“…Privileges can be summarized with three major categories: i) Authoring : create, delete, update, and upload on resources; ii) Reading : read and download a resource; and iii) Publishing : publish a resource to a Central Server. 1 We propose to use roles to simplify the management of privileges.…”
