An Active Safety System for Low-Speed Bus Braking Assistance

Abstract: Abstract-Buses and coaches are massive Passenger Transportation Systems (PTS), because they represent more than half of land PTS in the European Union. Despite of that, bus accident figures are lower than other means of transport, but its size and weight increase the severity of accidents in which buses are involved, even at low speed. In urban scenarios, turnings and manoeuvres around bus stops are the main causes of accidents, mostly due to low visibility, blind spots or driver's distractions. Therefore, the… Show more

“…Force feedback has also been used to warn the drivers of a potential risk in advanced driver assistance systems. To avoid collisions, a haptic device can be added either in the pedals [35] or in both pedals and steering wheel [36,37] to interact with the driver.…”

“…AEBS has been also adopted to the heavy weather conditions, such as the asphalt covered in ice and snow [4]. By taking in consideration to city traffic, pedestrians, bicycle drivers and changing weather conditions, AEBS becomes one of the significant driver assistant systems to prevent rear-end collisions [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Although, these cases were supported with suitable controlling technologies, an adaptive AEBS is required in case of a rapid decrease in the road friction coefficient during braking.…”

“…Improvements to heavy vehicle and bus safety have been initiated by many countries through the installation of additional mirrors. Yet, there are still some blind-spot areas where drivers cannot see other road users [21,22]. In addition, buses may have many passengers on board.…”
