An ACO Algorithm for Effective Cluster Head Selection

Abstract:

This paper presents an effective algorithm for selecting cluster heads in mobile ad hoc networks using ant colony optimization. A cluster in an ad hoc network consists of a cluster head and cluster members which are at one hop away from the cluster head. The cluster head allocates the resources to its cluster members. Clustering in MANET is done to reduce the communication overhead and thereby increase the network performance. A MANET can have many clusters in it. This paper presents an alg… Show more

“…Apart from the traditional control theory based on continuous/discrete dynamics, the MDS is important in the control of discrete engineering systems. The MDS is a well-known concept in graph theory and has already been applied to the design and/or control of various types of discrete engineering systems, which include mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) [ 18 – 20 ], transportation routing [ 21 ], and computer communication networks [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…For the purposes of control design, we investigate the dependence of the size of the minimum dominating set (MDS) of nodes on topological features of real networks, such as a variable scaling exponent that correlates to a different decay steepness of the degree distribution and the connectivity of high-degree nodes. The concept of MDS has been applied to the design and/or control of various kinds of discrete systems, which include mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) [17][18][19][20], transportation routing [21] and computer communication networks [21,22].…”

“…The literature review section of the paper includes the works proposed previously for selecting the cluster heads namely, LEACH protocol, NSGA, PSO, GSA, ABC, HSA, etc. In [7], the authors analyze a scheme that integrates four important clustering techniques such as connectivity based scheme ID based clustering, weighted approach, and probability based clustering. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is employed for optimizing the count of clusters and for selecting the optimal cluster heads.…”
