The three-dimensional (3D) size and morphology of high-temperature metal components need to be measured in real time during manufacturing processes, such as forging and rolling. Since the surface temperature of a metal component is very high during the forming and manufacturing process, manually measuring the size of a metal component at a close distance is difficult; hence, a non-contact measurement technology is required to complete the measurement. Recently, machine vision technology has been developed, which is a non-contact measurement technology that only needs to capture multiple images of a measured object to obtain the 3D size and morphology information, and this technology can be used in some extreme conditions. Machine vision technology has been widely used in industrial, agricultural, military and other fields, especially fields involving various high-temperature metal components. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the application of machine vision technology in measuring the 3D size and morphology of high-temperature metal components. Furthermore, according to the principle and method of measuring equipment structures, this review highlights two aspects in detail: laser scanning measurement and multi-view stereo vision technology. Special attention is paid to each method through comparisons and analyses to provide essential technical references for subsequent researchers.

A spatial phase unwrapping algorithm based on multi-anchors bidirectional location and suppression (SPUA-MBLS) is proposed. Spatial phase unwrapping algorithms (SPUAs) can play an important role in three-dimensional (3-D) measurement due to their phase unwrapping without any additional auxiliary pattern. SPUAs based on line scanning can achieve much faster phase unwrapping line-by-line than the traditional SPUA based on reliability sort, such as the quality-guided SPUA. But they are prone to suffer from residual error propagation caused by noise. The proposed algorithm first binarizes the wrapped phase to generate a crude fringe order map with multi-anchors and then cross-validates this map forward-backward to locate and suppress those multi-anchors as much as possible. Thus, a more perfect fringe order map can be segmented to achieve spatial phase unwrapping with a more effective improvement of residual error propagation. The experimental results show the feasibility and validity of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm is proved to have higher measurement accuracy, and it has also shown higher robustness in anti-noise performance while inheriting the high-speed phase unwrapping feature.

A new spatial phase-unwrapping algorithm based on single-pixel binarized (SPB) line pattern is proposed. The conventional spatial phase-unwrapping method produces easily the accumulation and propagation of errors for the wrapped phase in the regions with isolated 2π jumps generated by shadow and sharp changing surfaces. In this paper, the SPB deformed line pattern extracted by the proposed small window retrieval method can determine accurately the corresponding fringe order; then the wrapped phase is unwrapped point-to-point, in which the small window is adaptive for each light line. The measuring accuracy of the proposed method is close to the quality-guided method with high precision, but it performs simultaneously at higher robustness to measure a multi-object image. Only one additional SPB line pattern is projected and the phase-unwrapping process does not involve a time-consuming point-by-point sorting, so the proposed method can be applied to the real-time 3D measurement. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.
