An 8- to 10-Year Follow-up of Denture Satisfaction and Oral Health–Related Quality of Life with Implant-Retained Mandibular Overdentures

Abstract: Background: This 10-year follow-up study reports denture satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life of edentulous patients treated with two-implant mandibular overdentures. Methods: This is a follow-up of a previous study carried out between 1997-2005. Originally, the patients were randomly divided into two groups: one receiving two-implant mandibular overdentures (IODs) and another, relined mandibular dentures (RCDs). The latter group were offered and accepted IODs at two years, which then became an… Show more

“…4 The type and quality of prosthetic appliances were reported as one aspect of oral health that affect the patient satisfaction and quality of life. 5,6 Despite recent improvements in dentistry, complete dentures were still regarded as the solution for individuals who were missing teeth in terms of appearance, functionality and social interaction. 7 With complete denture, there was some improvement in patient satisfaction and OHRQL.…”

“…The mandibular implant-assisted overdentures were evidenced in a number of studies to improve patient satisfaction and OHRQL. 5,6 This improvement is probably the result of better stability, retention, adaptation and chewing efficiency of the implant overdentures. 10,11 Therefore, the implant-assisted overdenture was recommended as the standard method for prosthetic rehabilitation of mandibular edentulous subjects.…”

“…A complete prosthesis with dental implants and attachments aiding in retention of the prosthesis is considered a predictable and efficient treatment with a high degree of patient satisfaction. [1][2][3] Patients interested in implant stabilization of mandibular complete prostheses are historically treated with placement of two dental implants in the interforaminal region, followed by a clinical reline using a soft-reline material. After a period of implant osseointegration, the retentive abutments are placed, and an elastomeric impression made within the intaglio surface of the prosthesis using a functionally generated (aka "closed-mouth") reline technique.…”
