An 8.8 ps RMS Resolution Time-To-Digital Converter Implemented in a 60 nm FPGA with Real-Time Temperature Correction

Abstract: This paper presented a non-uniform multiphase (NUMP) time-to-digital converter (TDC) implemented in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) with real-time automatic temperature compensation. NUMP-TDC is a novel, low-cost, high-performance TDC that has achieved an excellent performance in Altera Cyclone V FPGA. The root mean square (RMS) for the intrinsic timing resolution was 2.3 ps. However, the propagation delays in the delay chain of some FPGAs (for example, the Altera Cyclone 10 LP) vary significantly as th… Show more

“…Furthermore, TDC nonlinearities are also evaluated as they impact negatively upon the system resolution. In the literature, the most widely-used metrics to characterize TDC nonlinearities are differential nonlinearity (DNL) and integral nonlinearity (INL) [ 26 ]. DNL refers to the difference between each actual output step-width and the ideal output step-width.…”

“…Time-of-flight (TOF) was proposed by T. F. Budinger in 1977 [ 3 ], where positron annihilation positions were calculated by measuring the triggering time difference of two gamma photons. Therefore, by improving the timing performance of the detector while reducing the uncertainty of positron annihilation localization, the sensitivity of the PET system may be effectively improved [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“…[26]; and the performance of the readout electronics (bandwidth, slew rate, signal-noise ratio, etc.) [27,28]. Photonic crystals can change the propagation path of scintillation photons by adding microstructures on the crystal surface, thus improving the time and energy performance of PET detector [29].…”
