Amyloidomas of soft parts: Diagnosis by fine‐needle aspiration

Abstract: A tumoral mass of amyloid (amyloidoma) arising in the soft tissues of the distal extremities is exceedingly unusual, and applying the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy technique to specifically diagnose this condition is even more infrequent. Herein, we report an example of two separate amyloidomas arising in the right calf of an otherwise asymptomatic elderly man who was referred to the sarcoma clinic because these masses clinically and radiographically simulated a malignant neoplasm. The fine-needle aspira… Show more

“…In addition to sampling techniques, preparation technique is also a pronounced determinant for diagnostic performance. Accumulated evidence shows that conventional cytological evaluation is capable to provide diagnostic clues in non-granulomatous diseases, such as amyloidosis, necrotizing lymphadenitis [37,38]. On the other hand, cytology is a more potent diagnostic tool for granulomatous disease.…”

“…Amyloidoma, also called amyloid tumor, is a nodular amyloid deposit. It is the least common presentation of amyloidosis and a well‐known mimicker for neoplasm . Amyloidosis is often associated with plasma cell dyscrasias (such as multiple myeloma, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), and rarely B cell type Non‐Hodgkin lymphoma) and chronic inflammatory diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren syndrome, and tuberculosis) .…”
