“…Veterans with PTSD did not differ in Aβ and tau PET SUVR, or MRI volumes from those with no PTSD, despite having a lower Montréal Cognitive Assessment score. 34 Self-reported TBI with loss of consciousness was not associated with neuritic plaques or neurofibrillary tangles at autopsy in a pooled dataset from the Religious Orders Study (ROS), The Memory and Aging Project (MAP), and the Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) cohorts or in the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) cohort. 35 A history of self-reported mild TBI (mTBI) in 134 CU elders was not significantly associated with cortical Aβ burden or accumulation.…”

“…However, in contrast to studies based on clinically diagnosed AD dementia, neither TBI nor PTSD were associated with AD biomarkers of Aβ, tau, and neurodegeneration, or with WMH, a finding consistent with other biomarker or neuropathological studies. 34,35,58 This information raises questions about alternative mechanisms underlying cognitive symptoms and AD diagnosis in these patients.…”

“…After examining demographic, medical, and psychiatric covariates, results from a series of hierarchical linear regressions showed that only APOE had significant association with 18 F-Florbetaben SUVR. We have previously reported that PTSD was not associated with PET findings in this AIBL-VETS cohort 58 . A T-test on 18 F-Florbetaben SUVR showed no difference between TBI and NC (Cohen's d=0.31, p=0.2), despite the larger number of APOE4 carriers in the TBI group.…”

“…The U.S. based Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), and Australian Imaging Biomarkers and Lifestyle study of aging (AIBL) used PET imaging to estimate the uptake of radioactive tracers that bind to b-amyloid and tau in Vietnam veterans with and without PTSD. 12,14 The uptake of these tracers represents a proxy measure of amyloid and tau burden. In contrast to the epidemiological studies, these studies did not lend credence to the hypothesis of an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease pathology in PTSD, as suggested by previous structural neuroimaging studies.…”

“…10,11 Subsequent human studies with comprehensive measurements, including an array of biomarkers of AD contributed to this growing area of research. [12][13][14] This paper reviews the risk of dementia in PTSD in the light of the latest research findings. This review was conducted based on articles published on MEDLINE, EMBASE, and SCOPUS from January 1990 to December 2019.…”
