Amyand’s hernia: a 10-year experience with 6 cases

Abstract: Purpose Amyand’s hernia is a rare hernia defined as an inguinal hernia that contains the appendix within the hernia sac. Current treatment of Amyand’s hernia remains controversial. Our study retrospectively reviewed 6 cases of Amyand’s hernia, aiming to provide a reference for the surgical treatment of Amyand's hernia. Methods Six patients diagnosed with Amyand’s hernia from September 2010 to May 2020 were retrospectively enrolled in our study. We … Show more

“…Though the pathogenesis of the association of acute appendicitis with Amyand hernia is unknown, studies have proposed two possible mechanisms [ 8 ]: (i) inflammation caused by appendix compression due to muscle contraction or an abrupt acute increase in intra-abdominal pressure; and (ii) appendicitis caused by extra-luminal obstruction caused by pressure in the hernia's neck.…”

“…Its pathophysiology is still unknown, but in cases where there is associated appendicitis, inflammation may occur due to increased intra-abdominal pressure or due to increased pressure directly in the inguinal ring due to an extra luminal obstruction (5). The mechanism of inflammation in these cases is explained by the reduction in blood flow to the appendix, which generates bacterial growth (6).…”

“…In cases where the appendix is normal, only hernia repair is performed with mesh placement, either open or laparoscopically. In young patients, even in the absence of appendicitis, appendectomy may be indicated (5).…”
