Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii Dubowski, 1877) spreading in the Danube River Basin

Abstract: Summary Whereas earlier Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii) findings in the Danube River were only single specimens, data reported in this study represent the first record on establishment of a local population. An overview of the spread of the Amur sleeper in the Danube River basin is also presented.

“…Although its native range is situated in the Russian Far East, northeastern China and the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, the Amur sleeper is now spread throughout most of eastern Europe and a large part of central Europe (Koščo et al, 2003;Reshetnikov, 2004Reshetnikov, , 2010. Even though the Amur sleeper's influence on native freshwater species in the Danube is still unknown (Hegediš et al, 2007;Lenhardt et al, 2011), its negative impact on freshwater biodiversity in other regions has been observed (Reshetnikov, 2003). However, there have been no attempts made Fig.…”

The furthermost downstream sighting locality (s 1 ) was situated at the 744 river km, and the one furthest upstream (s n or, in this case, s 10 ) was at the 1,139 river km, which makes the distance between them 395 km (D = s 10 -s 1 ).…”

“…In the same year it was collected in the Gulf of Finland (Panov et al 1999). During the last few years Chinese sleeper has been consecutively found in the Tisza River drainage area in Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania (Koščo et al 2003, Hegediš et al 2007) and in Danube River within the territory of Serbia and Bulgaria (Jurajda et al 2006, Hegediš et al 2007. P. glenii was also found in White Sea and Arctic Ocean basins (Bogutskaya and Naseka 2002;Koščo et al 2003).…”

“…Recently, it was recorded in the Vistula River near Tczew and in the Wisłoka River (Wiśniewolski et al 2001). Expansion of the range of this species is still in progress (Bogucka and Naseka 2002;Hegediš et al 2007;Reshetnikov 2004;Jurajda et al 2006).…”
