“…Since the early 1980s, offset-dependent reflectivity, or amplitude-variation-with-offset ͑AVO͒ analysis, of seismic data has been used successfully to associate shear-and compressional-wave properties with the presence of oil or natural gas ͑Ostrander, 1984; Allen and Peddy, 1993;Castagna 1993;Castagna et al, 1993;. We hypothesize that with careful consideration of the physics and material properties governing electromagnetic wave propagation, similar methodologies may be applied to ground-penetrating radar ͑GPR͒ data to make detailed material property measurements of the shallow subsurface.…”

“…AVO or Amplitude Variation with Offset searches for a variation in the amplitude of a seismic reflection with offset on an NMO corrected CMP gather. The use of AVO as a direct hydrocarbon indicator in clastic rocks is based on changes to the Pwave velocity (V P ) to S-wave velocity (V S ) ratio of a reservoir rock when gas is introduced into pore spaces (Allen and Peddy, 1993). P-waves are sensitive to changes in pore fluid; the introduction of gas into the pore spaces of a rock greatly reduces the P-wave velocity.…”

“…Surface consistent true amplitude preservation was applied to reprocess twenty-one 2D seismic lines near the Hsinying and the Kuantian gas fields. The reprocessed seismic data were used to perform seismic attribute analyses such as AVO, P-G cross-plot, A/B, and inverted impedance (Ostrander, 1984;Allen and Peddy, 1993;Hsiuan et al, 1993;Hilterman, 2001). Here P and G are the intercept and the gradient of the linear relationship between the incidence angle square and the reflection amplitude in the equation of Shuey (1985).…”
