“…This conclusion is supported by results of western blotting using the E4 antiserum of M. persicae where increased signal intensity of the 66 kDa band was observed in the resistant strain. The cross-reactivity exhibited between the 66 kDa band from both resistant and susceptible D. v. virgifera with M. persicae E4 antiserum suggests that the resistance associated esterase is not immunologically distinct from the susceptible esterase and the intensity difference is likely the result of the quantitative rather than qualitative modification of group II esterases [26][27][28][29].…”

“…Although insecticide resistance has not, to date, been reported in S. avenae, it has evolved in several other aphid species, including most recently in the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Homoptera: Aphididae) (Ono et al, 1999). Our last point of consideration concerns the validity of using suction traps to obtain genetically representative samples of aphids over large areas of their preferred host (ie wheat).…”

“…The second change involves modification of regulatory DNA sequences outside the protein coding region, which results in increased protein synthesis. Gene amplification has been conclusively documented in the aphids, Myzus persicae (esterases E4 and FE4) (Field et al, 1988;Field and Devonshire, 1998) and Schizaphis graminum (Type I esterases) Ono et al, 1999), mosquitoes, Culex quinquefasciatus, C. pipens, C. tarsalis, and C. tritaeniorhynchus (esterases A and B) (Mouches et al,1986;Karunaratne et al, 1998;Hemingway et al, 1998), and brown planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens (NI-EST1) (Small and Hemingway, 2000). The combined results from biochemical, kinetic, and inhibition characterizations (Zhou et al, 2004), as well as immunological analyses (this study) imply an over-expression of the resistance-associated esterase in D. v. virgifera.…”
