Amplatzer Vascular Plug: Expanding the Applications Spectrum

Abstract: The Amplatzer Vascular Plug is a new embolization device which has been used in different vascular anomalies, especially by cardiologists in the cardiac and pulmonary circulations. It is underused by interventional radiologists. We used this device in three different vascular conditions, which we present here.

“…Even in the hands of an experienced interventionist, the technical complications of coil embolization are not rare. [6][7][8][9] In large vessels with pulsatile flow, precise placement of coils can be challenging and coil migration distal to the intended position is not uncommon even when coils are oversized. 6 Furthermore, large coils can cause displacement of the catheter from its selected location.…”

“…It has been used in the arterial and venous systemic circulation for a number of indications including iliac artery occlusion prior to endovascular repair of aortoiliac aneurysms or pelvic surgery, occlusion of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts, and testicular vein embolization [12,13]. Several recent reports have described its use for treatment of PAVMs but, to date, no large series addressing its effectiveness at treating these lesions has been published [14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…The AVP (AGA Medical, Golden Valley, Minn., USA) is a self-expandable cylindrical occluding device made of 144 nitinol mesh wires that allow the device to compress inside a catheter and, when released from the delivering catheter, return to its shape to occlude the target vessel or in our case the airway lumen [21,22,23]. The device has platinum markers on both ends.…”
