“…In this work, our goal was to carry out some preliminary experiments in this hitherto unexplored area to determine if there is an amount of amphiphilicity that results in desirable FR performance, hereafter referred to as the critical amphiphilic concentration (CAC). Besides, we envisioned, if illustrated true, this concept will be beneficial to other fields and applications where amphiphilicity has been investigated as a promising path such as medical devices or anti-icing surfaces. Therefore, to address this amphiphilicity question and limit the number of variables in this study, we synthesized a novel amphiphilic additive based on PDMS and PEG, and incorporated it in increasing amounts in a conventional polyurethane (PU) coating system, assessing the point where the PU system demonstrated the behavior of a FR PU system. We chose a simple PU system as the matrix rather than a highly hydrophobic matrix (e.g., silicone elastomer) so that the effect of the amphiphilic additive could be understood somewhat independently of the matrix polymer.…”
