Amphibian virology

Abstract: Amphibians are a diverse group of species; much work remains to be done to elucidate the viruses of amphibians. Viral diseases may play an important role in wild and captive amphibian populations. Iridoviruses are a leading cause of wild amphibian mortality events in the United States and are a common cause of amphibian mortality events worldwide. In addition to frank viral diseases, viral infections may play a role in the establishment of bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases and are an underlying cause o… Show more

“…However, the frog EIV has not been sequenced or isolated in cell culture. 16 The mechanism of cellular death in cells infected with EIVs has not been definitively determined. 10 Increased osmotic fragility of infected erythrocytes and lytic viral infection have been demonstrated in some fish and amphibian infections, and has also been suspected in reptiles.…”

“…Amphibians mainly live in or near water or wet land and are constantly confronted by infectious microbes, including enveloped viruses such as herpesviruses and ranaviruses (26). In this study, we used infection by the enveloped virus HSV type 1 (HSV-1) as a model to investigate the antiviral role of bg-CAT.…”
