Abstract:We provide an updated checklist of the anurans of the Salto Morato Nature Reserve (SMNR), Paraná, southern Brazil, including information on species endemism, conservation status, habitat use, and reproductive modes. We sampled the study area between February 2013 and July 2015, using Visual Encounter Surveys, totaling 700 hours of sampling effort. We supplement our primary data with secondary data (published papers and voucher specimens), and through these, we found a total of 54 anuran species representing 23 genera and 10 families. All the frogs recorded are endemic to the Atlantic Forest. Although no species has been listed as Endangered on the Red Lists of Paraná state, Brazil, and the IUCN, five are classified as Data Deficient. Most of the species recorded were arboreal (55.5%), a third were terrestrial (33.3%), and the remainders were rheophilic (11.1%). We identified 18 different reproductive modes, with types 1 (lay eggs in lentic water where the tadpoles develop) and 23 (direct development of terrestrial eggs) being the most common. Our findings indicate that the SMNR currently has the greatest diversity of anuran species and reproductive modes of any area in southern Brazil.

The Atlantic Forest is the home to a diverse and threatened fauna of amphibians. However, knowledge on these species is still scarce to many of its ecosystems, such as the Seasonal Forest. This study was aimed at determining the diversity of anurans in Parque Estadual Fritz Plaumann (PEFP), located in the municipality of Concórdia, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. The PEFP comprises 741 ha, and is the only Conservation Unit of Seasonal Forest in Santa Catarina state. From August 2010 to July 2011 we surveyed frogs fortnightly during four to ten days, from sunset until approximately midnight. Active, audio and visual searches were carried out at breeding sites and favorable areas to meet the species. The sampling effort of the survey was evaluated with species accumulation curve considering the field expeditions as sample units. The species composition of PEFP was compared with 16 other different vegetal formations of the Atlantic Forest biome through similarity analysis. Twenty-three species were recorded. The accumulation curve approached an asymptote, indicating that most species of the area were observed. Most species were observed in lentic habitats of open areas. The anuran species composition of PEFP was similar to other areas of Mixed Ombrophile Forest and Seasonal Forest in southern region. Although PEFP comprised a relatively small area, the occurrence of habitat specialists, endangered amphibians that dependent on the forest, indicates the importance of this area for the conservation of the regional fauna. The continuation of long-term standardized studies is needed to monitor the population dynamics of recorded species and support alternative management practices, aiming at the conservation of anurans at the Seasonal Forest.

The Atlantic Rain forest, which is considered the second largest pluvial forest in the American continent, has had an estimated 93% of its original area destroyed. Although studies concerning the herpetofaunal diversity in this biome have been intensified in the past years, its diversity is still underestimated. The Nucleo Experimental de Iguaba Grande (NEIG) is included in an Environmental Protection Area (APA de Sapeatiba) in the Iguaba Grande municipality, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil (22° 51' S and 42° 10' W). The goal of this study was to conduct an inventory of the reptile and amphibian species that occur in this area between July 2008 and December 2009. We recorded 19 species of amphibians (18 anurans and one caecilian) and 15 species of reptiles (three lizards, 11 snakes and one amphisbaenian). Leptodactylus latrans and L. mystacinus had the highest capture rates among amphibians captured, and among reptiles, Ameiva ameiva, Hemidactylus mabouia and Mabuya agilis had the highest capture rates. Rarefaction curves for both amphibians and reptiles did not reach the asymptote, indicating that the species richness in the NEIG is still underestimated.
