Amphibia, Anura, restinga of Baixada do Maciambu, municipality of Palhoça, state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil

Abstract: Little is known about amphibian communities on Brazilian restingas (coastal sand dune scrublands). This study presents a first approximation to the list of anuran species from the restinga of Baixada do Maciambu, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. We sampled using three methods (pitfall traps with drift fences, transect of active search, and surveys at breeding sites) from July 2007 to April 2010. We recorded 15 species in six families, of which Hylidae was represented by the greatest number of species. Compared… Show more

“…Species lists (Wachlevski and Rocha 2010;Telles et al 2012;Affonso et al 2014;AlmeidaGomes et al 2014;Crivellari et al 2014) typically constitute an essential first step for the monitoring of the fauna of specific habitats and the assessment of the status of species and their populations, which can be used to guide conservation decision-making (Pimenta et al 2005), especially considering that most strategies are based on local species richness (Rocha et al 2003) and on the extinction risk of different species (Miller et al 2006).…”

“…The anurans of Santa Catarina state represent 15% of the described species in Brazil (Lucas 2008). Despite recent taxonomic studies (Kwet 2006, few have focused on diversity and conservation of amphibians of the area (Hartmann et al 2008, Lingnau 2009, Dallacorte 2010, Wachlevski & Rocha 2010, and species from many areas are still poorly known (Lucas 2008). Knowledge on diversity of species in conservation units is also limited to few studies , Dallacorte 2010, Wachlevski & Rocha 2010.…”

“…Studies of amphibian and reptile diversity in Atlantic Rainforest areas have grown considerably over the past five years (e.g., Dixo and Verdade, 2006;Juncá, 2006;Moraes et al, 2007;Colombo et al, 2008;Carvalho-e-Silva et al, 2008;Lucas and Fortes, 2008;Santana et al, 2008;Serafim et al, 2008;Bertoluci et al, 2009;Narvaes et al, 2009;Marques et al, 2009;Araujo et al, 2010;Wachlevski and Rocha, 2010;Costa et al, 2010;Sousa et al, 2010;Vilela et al, 2011). For example, the number of studies concerning the composition of local amphibian and reptile fauna have also increased in this period in the state of Rio de Janeiro (e.g., Rocha and Van Sluys, 2006;Carvalho et al, 2007;Carvalho-e-Silva et al, 2000;Rocha et al, 2008;Silva et al, 2008;Pontes et al, 2009;Almeida-Gomes et al, 2008.…”
