We studied the amphibian community of the Private Reserve of Natural Heritage (RPPN) Serra Bonita, an area of 20 km2 with steep altitudinal gradients (200–950 m a.s.l.) located in the municipalities of Camacan and Pau-Brasil, southern Bahia State, Brazil. Data were obtained at 38 sampling sites (including ponds and transects within the forest and in streams), through active and visual and acoustic searches, pitfall traps, and opportunistic encounters. We recorded 80 amphibian species distributed in 15 families: Aromobatidae (1), Brachycephalidae (3), Bufonidae (4), Centrolenidae (2), Ceratophryidae (1), Craugastoridae (7), Eleutherodactylidae (2), Hemiphractidae (2), Hylidae (42), Hylodidae (1), Leptodactylidae (7), Microhylidae (3), Siphonopidae (1), Odontophrynidae (3) and Pipidae (1). Species richness was positively correlated with monthly rainfall. Near 36% of the species were found in strictly forest environments, 15% are endemic to Bahia State and 77.2% are endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome. The large species diversity of this small area, the high degree of endemism and the taxonomic and biogeographic significance turn the Serra Bonita mountain into a hotpoint for amphibians within Brazil’s Atlantic Forest hotspot.

The frogs of the family Ceratophryidae (comprised of three genera containing 12 species) are well known for their voracious feeding behavior and unique morphologies in both larval and post-metamorphic life stages. Nevertheless, relatively little is known about the diet of these species, especially in nature. We summarized the current knowledge of the diet of larval and post-metamorphic ceratophryids in both natural and experimental settings by conducting a literature review, specimen dissections, and field observations. Prior to this study, diet information did not exist for one fourth of the species in the family: Ceratophrys calcarata, Ceratophrys joazeirensis Ceratophrys stolzmanni, and Ceratophrys testudo. We add, for the first time, information on the diet of Ceratophrys calcarata. In addition, our survey revealed that relatively few detailed studies with large sample sizes have been conducted on the diet of these frogs. Frequently, knowledge of the diet of a species is derived from palatability experiments using captive individuals (often a single individual). From those diet studies that were conducted under natural conditions, ceratophryids can be classified as generalist, opportunistic predators, often preying on a wide variety of invertebrate and vertebrate prey. All species of ceratophryids for which we obtained information on diet were found to consume vertebrates, with anuran prey occurring in nearly all species. Even less is known about the diet of the tadpoles of these species; while cannibalism is assumed to be widespread, we found evidence for cannibalism at the larval stage in only three species. Future studies should attempt to understand the trophic ecology of these species under natural scenarios at both life stages, and an ontogenetic approach using individuals across multiple size classes could elucidate the niche shifts associated with these species from larva to adult.

Hyophryne histrio was described in 1954 as a new species and placed in its own genus based on a single juvenile specimen from Ilhéus, State of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. This species was known only from the holotype until 1999 when a series of specimens was collected 50 km from the type-locality. Herein, we provide a redescription of the species based on this new material and present new information on morphological variation in order to help with the recognition of this poorly known species. The diagnostic characters are: occipital skin fold present, interdigital membranes between the toes well developed, dark venter with white blotches, an arrow-shaped dorsal color pattern that begins just after the occipital fold, and a distinct pale line between the venter and dorsum. Dermal spines, which were found in all males and vary in the number of spines and location, are reported for the first time in this species; gravid females have dermal spines only in the pericloacal region. We also compare Hyophryne histrio to all other Neotropical microhylid genera.
