Population declines and species extinction can be abated through the establishment of effective conservation policies. Actions and policies towards biodiversity conservation must be well planned and priorities must be set. Besides the widely recognized principles of systematic conservation planning, it is also important to consider species attributes, such as their evolutionary distinctiveness (ED) and distribution pattern. In this study we did a gap analysis to evaluate protection status of anuran species endemic to the Brazilian Cerrado. We then selected priority areas for conservation in this biome based on a systematic conservation planning framework, also including species attributes as prioritization criteria. We found 65 gap species, for which less than 20 % of their conservation targets are met by the current network of protected areas, and 39 of them are not protected at all. Priority areas are located in the central portion of the Cerrado, and include river valleys and mountaintops. Mountains in southeastern and central Cerrado are especially rich in endemic and range-restricted species, resulting in higher priority values for these areas. Priority areas selected here are also the richest regions and have greater Total Evolutionary Distinctiveness than the rest of the biome, demonstrating their high potential for conserving evolutionary history of anuran lineages in the Cerrado. Despite their great importance for biodiversity, areas that have higher richness of endemic species are also those that suffered from more severe loss of habitat, which reinforces the urgency for effective actions towards species conservation.

Espécie ameaçada.Many cases of species decline or disappearance are being documented worldwide, primarily related to change and loss of habitat. We present strong evidences on the disappearance of Proceratophrys moratoi in its type locality, the area of Botucatu, São Paulo, and south eastern Brazil. Between August 2006 and December 2008 we exhaustively search for the species in its two occurrence areas in Botucatu. However, the species was not recorded in these areas. The species has high specificity and low plasticity regarding environment occupation, and does not adapt to the anthropogenic changes in its habitat. These data demonstrate the need to protect the occurrence areas of Proceratophrys moratoi, especially as a full protection reserve to guarantee the survival of the remaining populations. New clues on anuran evolution: the oldest record of an extant hyloid clade in the Oligocene of Patagonia

Despite the enormous diversity of the extant South American batrachofauna, its fossil record is sparse. Few pre-Neogene anuran remains have been attributed to extant taxa and, although some have been considered neobatrachians their relationships with extant groups are still mostly uncertain. In this context, a series of fossils recently collected in Oligocene sediments of central Patagonia are assigned to Odontophrynidae. This assignation is supported by an exclusive combination of characters, including extensive frontoparietals, in medial contact and deflecting posteriorly, with crescent-shaped posterolateral projections; robust pterygoid anterior ramus, reaching the planum antorbitale, projecting dorsally; notched premaxillary pars palatine; dentate vomers, narrowly separated medially; robust neopalatines, narrowly separated medially, bearing a conspicuous ridge, and with expanded lateral edges. The well-preserved fossil specimens were considered representative of a new genus and species, Chachaiphrynus lynchi. The presence of an Oligocene Odontophrynidae in central Patagonia, about 500 km south from the southernmost extant distribution of the group, would be associated with the more benign climate inferred in this region during the Paleogene.
