AMPH-IMA04: a revised Hypercard program to determine the name of an amphibole from chemical analyses according to the 2004 International Mineralogical Association scheme

Abstract: In 2004, the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) amended the IMA 97 amphibole classification and nomenclature scheme by adding a fifth group to include the recently discovered B (LiNa) amphiboles ferriwhittakeriite and ferri-ottoliniite, which cannot be fitted into the four major amphibole groups. New root-names such as sodic-pedrizite in the Mg-Fe-Mn-Li group and obertiite and dellaventuraite in the sodic group along with two new prefixes, parvo and magno have also been added. As result it has becom… Show more

“…This problem is further complicated by the fact that most amphibole analyses are incomplete and some inaccurate. This problem will be resolved only when complete analyses can be obtained including minor components and volatiles and when different valance states of some elements such as Fe and Mn can be determined instead of estimated, as often the case (Stout, 1972;Schumacher, 1997;Mogessie et al, 2004). Until such complete and accurate analyses can be obtained, there will always be analyses that do not fit in IMA schemes (this study, Mogessie et al, 2004;Yavuz, 2006).…”

The latest scheme was not even a few years old, yet there were additions to it or "suggestions" for its modification (Hawthorne and Oberti, 2006, Mills et al, 2009.…”

“…Fe 3þ content in pyroxene was estimated by charge balance from microprobe data. Amphibole structural formulae have been calculated with the AMPH-IMA04 Program (Mogessie et al, 2004) on the basis of 23 oxygens and normalization scheme.…”
