Amperometric Sensors Based on Synthetic Hydrotalcites and Their Application for Ethanol Detection in Beer

Abstract: The electrochemical and electrocatalytic behavior of electrodes modified with a Co/Al-NO 3 hydrotalcite (HT) has been investigated and compared with that displayed by Ni/Al-NO 3 HT modified electrodes. Mono and polyhydric compounds have been tested to study electrocatalysis. At Co/Al-NO 3 HT modified electrodes only polyhydric compounds give e current signal, whereas at Ni/Al-NO 3 HT modified electrodes, both alcohols and polyhydric compounds can be detected. The different electrocatalytic behavior of Ni and C… Show more

“…Indeed, the redox couple Ni 2+ /Ni 3+/4+ inside the lattice structure has an electrocatalytic activity with respect to the oxidation of mono or polyhydric alcohols and aliphatic and aromatic amines [33]. Samples of beer have been analysed to verify the validity of the proposed analytical method for the detection of their ethanol content [34]. Afterwards, NiAl-sensors were optimized for the determination of ethanol, glycerol and glucose ( Table 1).…”

“…The electrochemical responses of [Fe(CN) 6 [8], polyoxometalate ions [9,10], manganese porphyrins [11], and several organometallic [12] and organic anions [13][14][15] adsorbed in LDH-modified electrodes have been reported. LDH-modified electrodes have been investigated for use as electrochemical sensors [16,17], for electrocatalysis [18], as cathodes for rechargeable batteries [19], as electrochemical capacitors [20,21], etc.…”

“…Hydrotalcites (HTs), also known as hydrotalcite like compounds, are employed in the construction of biosensors [8,9], amperometric [10,11] and potentiometric sensors [12], due to their attractive features such as high water content, high mobility of analytes and reaction products, non-toxicity and high chemical and hydrolytic stability.…”
