Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccination: long-term protection

Abstract: Objective: To identify evidence of the impact of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine on the epidemiology of invasive Hib disease. Sources of data:This review was based on a search of MEDLINE, LILACS, technical reports, national and international guidelines (publications from 1991 to 2005). The keywords Haemophilus influenzae type b, immunization, impact and effectiveness, alone or in combination, were used to retrieve the articles. Studies published before 1991 and cited in the references of … Show more

“…Na verdade, o uso de vacinas com o componente coqueluche acelular tem demonstrado um decréscimo na incidência de EHH e outros eventos adversos 5 . No entanto, e embora controverso 6 , existem fortes evidências indicando que a DTP/Hib oferece uma proteção mais duradoura do que a DTP acelular/Hib contra infecções clínicas provocadas por Hib 7 . Deve-se destacar que a vacina DTP/Hib controla todas as doenças cobertas pelo seu uso no Brasil.…”

“…5,[25][26][27] However our data indicate that anti-PRP antibody concentrations in vaccinated children apparently do not wane below protective thresholds over time, probably due to the differential Hib epidemiology and type of combination vaccine used. 28 Further surveillance studies will elucidate this possibility.…”

“…9 In some countries, the need to review the prevailing vaccination schemes to include a booster dose has been suggested. [25][26][27]35 Results from this study indicate that with the three-doses scheme, IgG antibodies seem to be sufficient at least for 93 months. Notwithstanding, it is suggested to perform surveillance studies to define the need to reconsider the current strategy of three doses without booster or the timing of the three doses currently given.…”

“…In 1999, the immunogen against Haemophilus influenzae type B was included in the PNI vaccination calendar, which reduced the invasive diseases produced by this bacterium; a year later, there was a decline of more than 72% in the incidence of pneumonia and meningitis in children aged under five (from 35.4 to 9.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). In children aged less than one year this reduction was 90% (from 36.5 to 3.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) two years after the introduction of this vaccine 7 .…”
