Among Commercially Available Fruit Juices, Pomegranate Is the Most Effective Inhibitor of PMS-Trypsin Amyloid-Like Fibrils Formation

Abstract: The formation of amyloid fibrils is associated with many human illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, and Parkinson’s diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spongiform encephalitis, type 2 diabetes, and primary and secondary systemic amyloidosis. Nutrition contributes to the prevention of these diseases. The aim of our work was to look for commercially available fruit juices that can inhibit the formation of amyloid fibrils. Of the fruit juices that we examined, that of pomegranate was found to be the… Show more

“…En una aproximación sobre su capacidad de desagregación, las antocianinas muestran una significativa actividad desagregante (tabla 5, 26.63 %) sobre las fibrillas amiloides (Aβ1-42) preformadas en comparación a los efectos inhibitorios de su agregación informados para el extracto de café y jugo de granada 23 .…”

“…There are various possibilities for this, such as bonding to a solid support, chemical modification and the use of additive molecules (Kotormán et al 1986(Kotormán et al , 2003(Kotormán et al , 2009. Therefore, it is extremely important to find molecules that can inhibit the formation of unwanted amyloid fibrils (Panda and Jhanji 2019;Kasi and Kotormán 2019). Plants are rich in bioactive compounds, which deserve attention.…”

“…Protein conversion from their soluble state into well-structured amyloid fibrils is considered to cause a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases and systemic amyloidosis (Chiti and Dobson 2009). The lack of amyloid formation in plants in contrast to humans may suggest that plants probably possess special mechanisms to fight against protein misfolding (Kasi and Kotormán 2019a). Plants contain many compounds which stabilize the native structure of proteins (Eze et al 2019) much more easily than can be accomplished by immobilization (Simon et al 1986) or chemical modification (Kotormán et al 2009).…”
