AMM15: a new high-resolution NEMO configuration for operational simulation of the European north-west shelf

Abstract: Abstract. This paper describes the next-generation ocean forecast model for the European north-west shelf, which will become the basis of operational forecasts in 2018. This new system will provide a step change in resolution and therefore our ability to represent small-scale processes. The new model has a resolution of 1.5 km compared with a grid spacing of 7 km in the current operational system. AMM15 (Atlantic Margin Model, 1.5 km) is introduced as a new regional configuration of NEMO v3.6. Here we describe… Show more

“…This domain now also represents the common domain selected and in use in uncoupled mode configurations at the Met Office as the operational weather forecast UK atmosphere (UKV; e.g. Tang et al, 2013) from November 2016 and in research development for future operational implementation as an ocean forecast system (AMM15; Graham et al, 2017).…”

“…Model physics options used mirror those defined in the AMM15 configuration namelists (see the Supplement), and further details are provided by Graham et al (2017). Given the km-scale resolution, only a minimal amount of eddy viscosity is applied in the lateral diffusion scheme, to ensure model stability.…”

“…Figure 15a). Similarly, Graham et al (2018) compared 20-year runs of AMM15 (1.5-km resolution) and an AMM7 run, which corresponds to the ST run in this study. They report that the summer months (June-August, JJA) bottom temperature biases (model minus EN4) varied from 0.47 ±1.19°C to 0.50 ±1.31°C for the different configurations.…”
