“…It should be kept in mind, however, that the reaction rates are very slow when the alle/lle ratios are higher than 0.3 to0.4 (Muller, 1984;jansen and Sejrup, 1986). By comparing the ratios obtained on Mya and Macoma from lithozones E3 to C with those reported by Miller et al (1979) from the Crag Series of southeastern England (alle/lle ratios between 0.86 and 1.20), it is evident that our lithozones are somewhat younger than these sequences. This interpretation is based upon the reasoning that while the geothermal gradient in the more deeply buried sediments in 81/26 may have increased the relative rates of epimerisation, the ratios in that core are still lower (hence younger) than ratios from the Crag sequences.…”

“…Fossil molluscan remains have provided raw material for an innovative dating technique based on post-mortem protein degradation in shell, applied in pioneering studies in NW Europe from the late 1970s onwards Miller et al, 1979;Miller and Mangerud, 1985;Bowen et al, 1989). The results on thin-shelled gastropods included a very small number of problematic outliers (e.g.…”

“…In the UK, D-Aile/L-Ile was first used for aquatic bivalves (Miller et al, 1979) and marine gastropods Bowen et al, 1985). DL ratios from terrestrial gastropods, when calibrated by independent means, showed four interglacial events postdating the Anglian glaciation and which were correlated with marine isotope stages 11 (Swanscombe), 9 (Purfleet), 7 (Aveley) and 5e (Trafalgar Square) (Bowen et al, 1989).…”
