“…Several investigators have examined the effects of variable extracellular composition upon the metabolic properties of medullary cells (Kean, Adams, Winters & Davis, 1961;Lowenstein, Smith & Segal, 1968;Alexander & Lee, 1970;Abodeely & Lee, 1971;Gutman, Wald & Czaczkes, 1973) but the importance of the osmotic environment has generally been overlooked when not implicit in the nature of the investigation (Lee, Vance & Cahill, 1962; Gans, Bailie & Biggs, 1966;Lowenstein & Hagopian, 1969;De Jairala, Vieyra & MacLaughlin, 1972; De Jairala, Vieyra, Garcia & Rasia, 1973).
