Amino Acid Interleaved Layered Double Hydroxides as Promising Hybrid Materials for AA2024 Corrosion Inhibition

Abstract: Various α-amino acid (αAA) molecules were screened for their ability to retard the corrosion of AA2024 aluminum alloy substrate. The αAAs screened were L-arginine (L-Arg), Lasparagine (L-Asn), L-cysteine (L-Cys), L-cystine, L-histidine (L-His), L-methionine (L-Met), L-phenylalanine (L-Phe), L-serine (L-ser), Ltryptophan (L-Trp), and L-tyrosine (L-Tyr). From their performances compared with that of the reference additives chromate and 2-mercaptobenzothiazolate (MBT), L-Cys and L-Phe were selected, and their lay… Show more

“…In this vein, we can note the use of LDH in corrosion inhibition for polymer coatings . Employed within waterborne polyurethane‐based coatings, LDH was found to be an interesting cargo in embedding corrosion inhibitors such as ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA),[147a] functionalized benzene sulfonic acid, and amino acid with l ‐cysteine to protect the AA2024 substrate . The encapsulation of the inhibitor in the LDH host structure prevents its migration in the coating, which would induce degradation.…”

“…Upon corrosive aggression, l ‐cysteine molecules are released from the LDH container, either by anion exchange or platelet dissolution, and retard efficiently the corrosion phenomena occurring in the AA2024 aluminum alloy. Reproduced with permission . Copyright 2016, Wiley.…”

“…Inhibitor doped LDH particles can limit the release events to corrosion triggered phenomena such as pH changes or presence of anions released as a result of corrosion processes. Successful entrapment of anionic inhibitors in LDH has been reported in the literature [27][28][29][30][31]. Following the previous work with zeolites [23], both anionic and cationic inhibitors were recently loaded into single LDH showing slight improvements compared to LDHs loaded with either of inhibitors [32].…”

“…Tyrosine and tryptophan have been studied for their UV stabilizing properties; however, histidine (HIS) and (PHE) are rarely reported. One study reports the beneficial role of PHE interleaved into LDH as a self-healing agent for polymer coating in corrosion inhibition for aluminium substrates [ 16 ]. Due to the presence of benzene (for PHE) or the heterocyclic imidazole ring (for HIS), both organic molecules should absorb in the short to medium wavelength range of the ultraviolet C (UVC) and ultraviolet B (UVB) regions.…”
