Amino Acid Concentrations in Seed of Preferred Forages of Bobwhites

Abstract: Nutritional factors have been hypothesized to regulate gaginaceous bid populations such as the Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus).Although protein is considered one of the most important and limiting nutrient categories in wild animal populations, we lack a complete understanding of the availability of essential amino acids in foodstuff protein. Seed grains comprise a major component of the annual diet of bobwhites throughout its geographic range. We investigated the concentration of 17 amino acids in see… Show more

“…In some studies, nutritional value of the acorns including crude protein contents of Q. kelloggii (Duncan and Clawson 1980), Q. alba (Vogt and Cox 1970;Vogel 1990), Q. incana (Short 1976) were reported. Quercus acorns were declared to include many essential amino acids (Videl and Varela 1969;Luk'yanets 1978) and the quality of proteins as measured by the essential amino acid composition varied considerably among species (Boren et al 1995). Acorns varieties of 12 oak species from Texas were analysed for chemical and physical properties including crude protein and the results at the variety and species level showed significant differences (Ofcarcik and Burns 1971).…”

“…Tropic croton is an aggressive disseminator of seed and can mechanically propel seed over 2 m (S. D. Askew and J. W. Wilcut, personal observation), and birds commonly consume seeds of Croton spp. (Boren et al 1995), thus increasing seed immigration to other fields.…”

“…However, wild bobwhites have access to many natural foods that supply them with the necessary nutrients and essential amino acids (Wood et al 1986;Peoples et al 1994b;Boren et al 1995). For example, bobwhites consume more seeds to meet its energy expenditure needs during the winter months when sources of protein, such as insects, are much scarcer (Rollins 2007;Herna ´ndez and Guthery 2012).…”
