The growth of Candida utilis NRRL Y-1084 in acid and enzymatic hydrolysates of cassava peel and on glucose in a mineral salts medium was investigated in aerobic submerged cultivation. Kinetic and stoichiometric parameters for growth were determined. The cardinal temperatures of this yeast strain were 14 °C, 33 °C and 41 °C. C. utilis exhibited no absolute requirement for growth factors, although its maximum specific growth rate (μ max) was higher in the mineral salts medium with yeast extract than without, but its biomass yield coefficient (Y x/s) did not differ much in these two media. In the enzymatic hydrolysate, its Y x/s value on sugar was 0.44 with a μ max of 0.35 h-1 , whereas the corresponding values were 0.52 and 0.48 h-1 in the acid hydrolysate and 0.50 and 0.37 h-1 in the mineral salts medium without yeast extract. The crude protein content of biomass grown in the glucose medium and the acid and enzymatic hydrolysates were 47.5%, 49.1% and 56.7%, respectively. The amino acid profile of the yeast biomass compared favourably with the FAO standard. Cassava peel hydrolysate has potential as a cheap carbohydrate feedstock for the production of yeast single cell protein by using C. utilis.

There is little information about Kazachstania slooffiae which dominates among other yeasts in the pigs' intestine. Therefore, the aims of this study were to characterise the yeast cell contents and to investigate which nitrogen sources, organic acids and alcohols may be utilised or produced by this species. The results showed that, K. slooffiae could use urea, ammonium sulphate, peptides and single amino acids and produce thereby ethanol and formic acid. However, this yeast did not metabolise amino acids, lactic, butyric, propionic and acetic acids as sole carbon source. Using a global metabolite profiling approach employing gas chromatography and high-resolution liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, was found that the amount of peptides and dehydroascorbic acid considerably increased in the fermentation residues after yeast cultivation. It is noteworthy that the cells of K. slooffiae had higher contents of nitrogen and total amino acids (especially lysine) than the cells of nutritional yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). This study indicates that due to potential production of peptides and formic acid in the intestinal tract, K. slooffiae might have an impact on the gut health. Moreover, from a nutritional standpoint, the cells of this yeast can be a good source of protein with useful amino acid composition for animal.

Rapidly proliferating cancer cells have much higher demand for proteinogenic amino acids than normal cells. The use of amino acids in human proteomes is largely affected by their bioavailability, which is constrained by the biosynthetic energy cost in living organisms. Conceptually distinct from gene-based analyses, we introduce the energy cost per amino acid (ECPA) to quantitatively characterize the use of 20 amino acids during protein synthesis in human cells. By analyzing gene expression data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, we find that cancer cells evolve to utilize amino acids more economically by optimizing gene expression profile and ECPA shows robust prognostic power across many cancer types. We further validate this pattern in an experimental evolution of xenograft tumors. Our ECPA analysis reveals a common principle during cancer evolution.
