Amino Acid Clusters Formed by Sonic Spray Ionization

Abstract: A novel ion source based on the principle of sonic spray ionization has been built and used to optimize mass spectrometric conditions for generating amino acid clusters. The ion source employs a simple pneumatic spray operated at extremely high nebulizing gas flow rates. Several factors that affect the performance of the cluster source are identified, and information from these observations provides insights into the mechanisms of gas phase ion formation. Serine is used as a model system in optimizing instrume… Show more

“…The P(E) measurements were conducted for each ion source, DESI (home-built [41] but similar to that of Prosolia, Inc., Indianapolis, IN), ESI (Thermo Electron LTQ, San Jose, CA), and ESSI (home-built [55]) under identical operating conditions of the atmospheric pressure interface. The external source parameters were those routinely employed for each ion source.…”

“…Magic numbers for amino acid cationic clusters [11][12][13] and preference for homochirality [14,15] have been reported. Negatively charged clusters of amino acids have also been produced [13].The formation and energetics of gas-phase multiplycharged anions (MCA) is a subject that has attracted much attention [16 -18]. Even though several multiplycharged molecular anions have been measured, observations of multiply-charged cluster anions are few.…”

“…SSI is a spray ionization technique first introduced by Hirabayashi et al [64,65] in the mid1990s, and then adopted and developed further by others [66]. A unique feature associated with SSI is that both positive and negative ions are formed simultaneously.…”
