An experiment was designed to estimate the effect of dietary fat (20 or 80 g/kg) on the responses of broiler chicks to changes in the ratios of bioavailable lysine (LB) to true metabolizable energy corrected to zero nitrogen balance (TMEn) in their diets. A comparative slaughter experiment used an initial slaughter group of 44 10-day-old male chicks; an additional 120 chicks from the same population were used in the 14-day experiment. Dietary treatments comprised two basal diets differing in fat content and formulated to have similar nutrient:TMEn ratios. Each basal diet was supplemented with four levels of lysine to provide four LB:TMEn ratios calculated, and subsequently found, to be the same in each basal diet series. Each of the eight diets was diluted with five levels of cellulose to ensure a range of intakes under ad libitum feeding. Three individually housed chicks were assigned to each of the 40 diets. Carcasses were assayed for water, nitrogen, lipids, ash, and gross energy; changes in these variables during the experiment were the response criteria. The fat content of the diet had no effect (P greater than .05) on the chick responses to LB:TMEn ratios. At a fixed energy intake the body weight gain, retained water, retained energy as protein and retained ash increased with the LB:TMEn ratio, with no conclusive evidence of a maximum response having been reached for any variable at an LB:TMEn ratio of .83 g/MJ. Retained energy was independent (P greater than .05) of the LB:TMEn ratio but the energy retained as neutral lipids tended to decrease as the ratio increased. The data support the view that the lysine requirement of the broiler chick varies according to the response criterion used in its assessment.

-Variations of the amino acid profile produced by rumen actions were established for fish meal (FM), corn grain (CG), corn gluten feed (GF), dehydrated beet pulp (DBP), and lucerne hay (LH), using the nylon bag technique. The effects of degradation of soluble or insoluble proteins were measured by rumen incubations at 0 h (washout value) and 16 h, respectively. Rumen incubations were performed on four cannulated wethers and the microbial contamination of incubated residues was corrected using a continuous 15 N-intraruminal infusion and solid associated bacteria isolates as the reference sample. The results showed that rumen degradation of both soluble and insoluble proteins produced changes in the amino acid profile, which were not uniform among feeds. Differences between feed and insoluble protein amino acid composition were limited for FM and DBP, important for GF and LH, and intermediate for CG. Differences between insoluble and undegraded protein amino acid composition were also limited for FM, GF, DBP, and LH and important in CG. The results showed that the amino acid profile in the undegraded protein and in the whole feed should be close for FM, DBP and LH. On the contrary, in CG, important variations are expected, since both solubility and degradability effects produced changes with the same tendency for most of the essential amino acids. In particular, our results showed a great decrease in the lysine content of the undegraded protein, which increases the lysine deficiency of this feed. An experiment was made to determine if the basic methodology of the bioassay for true metabolizable energy (TME) can be applied to the measurement of available amino acids (AAA) in feedingstuffs. Administration of graded levels of glucose (0-30 g) had no effect on the excretion of 13 AA by adult roosters. Feeding graded levels of soybean meal, alone or in combination with glucose, caused linear increases in AA excretion. Methods of measuring AAA are described and the importance of correcting for metabolic and endogenous AA excretion is discussed.
