Amine-Assisted Synthesis of Concave Polyhedral Platinum Nanocrystals Having {411} High-Index Facets

Abstract: High-index surfaces of a face-centered cubic metal (e.g., Pd, Pt) have a high density of low-coordinated surface atoms and therefore possess enhanced catalysis activity in comparison with low-index faces. However, because of their high surface energy, the challenge of chemically preparing metal nanocrystals having high-index facets remains. We demonstrate in this work that introducing amines as the surface controller allows concave Pt nanocrystals having {411} high-index facets to be prepared through a facile … Show more

“…Along with the tilting, the nanoparticles changes from four-armed star-like to elongated six-armed stars (Fig. 1d), which fits to the feature of octapod nanoparticles owning eight trigonal pyramidal arms 27 . On the basis of these observations, we proposed a concave polyhedral model of this unique iron oxide nanostructure (Fig.…”

“…In the past two decades, controlled synthesis (for example, ion-assisted methods) of unusual and sophisticated metallic nanostructures (for example, octahedral, tetrahexahedral and concave) [25][26][27][28][29] is prevailing compared with that of metal oxide nanostructures [30][31][32] . However, the investigation of iron oxide nanoparticles with different morphologies is rare, probably because it is difficult to prepare iron oxide nanoparticles with diverse shapes.…”

“…However, they are not atoms on the same environment because their CN of longer distance are different. Actually crystals with high index facets also represent high activity in many cases,118, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126 as well as edges. For accuracy and simplicity, we consider the edges as the turn of facets.…”

“…Selected‐area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns of an individual sphere (inset of Figure 4a) show several intense spots which are indexed to a fcc crystal structure, suggesting that several grain particles are randomly aggregated in the nanospheres, rather than oriented growth. Some atomic edge and kink sites caused by unsaturated Pt coordination atoms can be observed on the atomic Pt surface, which is highly valuable for high electrocatalytic performance (Figure 4b) 19…”
