AmiGo: Computational Design of Amigurumi Crochet Patterns

Abstract: We propose an approach for generating crochet instructions (patterns) from an input 3D model. We focus on Amigurumi, which are knitted stuffed toys. Given a closed triangle mesh, and a single point specified by the user, we generate crochet instructions, which when knitted and stuffed result in a toy similar to the input geometry. Our approach relies on constructing the geometry and connectivity of a Crochet Graph, which is then translated into a crochet pattern. We segment the shape automatically into chroche… Show more

“…Their research found that, while the crochet algorithm sequence is simple, the outcome product can be very complex. Çapunaman et al (2017) and Edelstein et al (Edelstein, 2022) developed computational design tools that extract crochet text instructions from the input of a 3D model. Seitz et al (2022) designed a pattern generator using visual language, and Guo et al (Guo et al, 2020) presented visual patterns using stitch meshes.…”

“…The algorithm makes it possible to translate the surface sections into verbal descriptions, providing the crafter with text-based instructions. Edelstein et al (2022) offer an alternative solution for computational crochet instruction in relation to volumetric items, developing a different algorithm that extracts crochet text instructions based on a closed triangle mesh and a given seed point and stitch size. Guo et al (2020) create computerized 3D crochet models from tiles that demonstrate the different types of stitches as building blocks.…”
